What you should know about stainless steel?

The usage of stainless steel has become so prominent these days. Most of the devices and tools that we use in our day to day life are made of stainless steel only. In this scenario, it is really good to know something about stainless steel.

Stainless steel is not a naturally formed metal. It is an alloy that is made combination of two metals – iron and chromium. When iron is added with at least 10.5% chromium, the chromium produces oxide layer on the steel surface that is highly resistant to corrosion. By increasing the amount of chromium, the steel becomes more resistance to the corrosion. Additionally, the steel also contain carbon, manganese and silicone. Sometimes, elements like Molybdenum and nickel are also added to steel for superior formability and corrosion resistance. Most people say that stainless steel is corrosion-free, which is not true. Though stainless steel does not corrode or rust like steel, it can get stained in when exposed to rare conditions. There are different grades of stainless steel made for use in different areas and environment. The stainless steel was discovered in the year 1913 by Sheffield, who was well known metallurgist that time. He found the stainless steel while he was experimenting different types of steel for making weapons. He found that iron with 13% chromium didn’t get rusted after many months. Today, stainless steel is used in applications that demand strength and increased corrosion. To know more about the uses and applications of stainless steel, you can browse the internet.
